The Rambert Grades syllabus is a Contemporary Dance technique-based training, with content developed by leading experts in dance education and performance, including Matthew Bourne, Hofesh Shechter, and ZooNation.
Rambert Grades is all about nurturing individuality through dance - helping every student find their voice, unlock their creativity, and develop skills that go far beyond the studio.
Each grade focuses on three key strands: Technical, Performance, and Creative - giving students the tools they need to thrive in the professional dance industry and beyond
The Technical Strand equips dancers with a wide understanding of technical contemporary dance skills enabling them to move safely and efficiently as they develop across all elements of technical skills, from floorwork to complex leaps.
The Performance Strand connects dance students with the professional industry, every dancer learns a solo created by a renowned choreographer. Personal interpretation is encouraged as students gain experience performing professional dance seen in theatres.
The assessment process favours process over the end product. Students gain the skills to investigate a creative task in group settings and to develop improvisation skills. A range of stimuli, such as an artwork, photograph or poem, are introduced in the process for students to develop their creative response, with ss favouring creative process over end product.
As students move through the Grades, they build strong technical dance skills that improve their physical ability, artistic expression, musicality, and confidence on stage. As they continue to refine these skills, they gain a solid foundation for future careers in dance or other creative fields, while also developing discipline, teamwork, and a better understanding of their bodies.
Rambert Grades Contemporary Dance training encourages independent thinking, self-expression, and personal interpretation. With a structured yet flexible approach, students are free to explore and develop their creativity. This supportive environment helps them build confidence, take risks, push boundaries, and express themselves in an authentic way.
The Creative Strand encourages teamwork and communication between students as they learn to share ideas, communicate and collaborate effectively. By supporting both individuality and cooperation, Rambert Grades ensures students excel not only as dancers but also as creative, confident individuals.
In a supportive environment where students are encouraged to express their ideas and celebrate their individuality, they build confidence in their unique contributions. This not only helps them recognize the value of what they have to offer but also develop an appreciation for the strengths and perspectives of others in the room, fostering a deep sense of self-worth and mutual respect
This syllabus lays a strong foundation for movement exploration – dance, sport and healthy living. It helps students develop key skills like body awareness, coordination, and flexibility, which are essential for both dance and other physical activities. By fostering an understanding of how movement supports overall health and well-being, the program encourages lifelong habits for physical fitness, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
Rambert Grades qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and attract UCAS points at Grades 6, 7, and 8, supporting career progression into higher education, even outside of dance.
